Al-Mursalat

The Emissaries

Al-Mursalat moves through urgent oaths, signs of creation, and scenes of the Day of Decision. Its recurring warning gives the chapter a deliberate rhythm: denial must be reconsidered after each new piece of evidence. Human beginnings, the earth's provision, and the fate of earlier peoples all challenge complacency. The closing contrast between punishment and welcoming shade connects the coming judgment with present choices, especially the refusal to bow before Allah.

Usually associated with the Makkan proclamation, this chapter addresses resistance to resurrection. Its repeated refrain organizes a sustained appeal rather than a detailed account of one historical event.

Stars, sky, and mountains lose their familiar order, while messengers reach their appointed gathering. The repeated warning then turns to earlier peoples. History and the coming judgment together expose the weakness of assuming that wrongdoing escapes consequences.

Birth and earth as signs

77:20–28

The chapter recalls a person's modest beginning, development within a protected place, and appointed term. It then names the earth that holds living and dead alike, with mountains and drinkable water. These gifts invite recognition of purposeful divine power.

Denial meets its consequence

77:29–40

Those who rejected the warning encounter a shadow offering no relief from flame. Their excuses and strategies cannot reverse the gathering. The forceful images underline judgment beyond the manipulation, bargaining, and evasions available in ordinary life.

Welcome and refusal to bow

77:41–50

Those mindful of Allah receive shade, water, fruit, and a welcome linked to their deeds. A final warning interrupts worldly ease and exposes refusal to bow. The chapter questions what further message could persuade persistent denial.
