Al-Ma'arij

The Ascending Stairways

Al-Maarij meets a challenge about punishment with a call to beautiful patience and a picture of the final day's terror. Close relationships cannot provide a ransom, and hoarded wealth cannot rescue its owner. Human anxiety and stinginess are contrasted with a disciplined life of prayer, acknowledged rights for the needy, belief in judgment, chastity, faithful promises, and honest testimony. These habits form a durable moral response to insecurity. The chapter closes by challenging assumed entitlement to Paradise and depicting the promised gathering from the graves.

70:36–44

Groups gather around the messenger while presuming a favorable destination. Their familiar beginnings and Allah's ability to replace them challenge this entitlement. The promised day brings swift emergence from graves and humbled eyes, ending the confidence of careless play.

Pause & reflectWhat makes you assume a good outcome without examining the life leading toward it?
