Surah 63 · 11 verses

Al-Munafiqun

The Hypocrites

Al-Munafiqun distinguishes true testimony from declarations used to disguise inward betrayal. Appealing appearance, polished speech, and solemn oaths can hide obstruction and fear. The chapter exposes economic intimidation against the Prophet's companions and boasts about expelling the supposedly weak, locating real honor with Allah, His messenger, and believers. Its final address turns directly to the faithful: wealth and children must not distract from remembrance, and generosity should happen before death creates the regret of wanting a little more time.

A Madinan chapter concerned with hypocrisy and communal tensions, Al-Munafiqun examines public claims, financial pressure, and pride. Its final warning calls believers to examine their own distractions rather than only identify others' faults.

1

Polished declarations and inward evasion

63:1–4

The hypocrites speak a true statement about the messenger while falsely presenting their own commitment. Oaths become a shield for obstruction, and impressive appearance disguises hollow resolve. Their fear of every shout reveals the insecurity beneath carefully performed confidence.

Pause & reflectWhat gap exists between the impression you give and the commitment you actually keep?

Pride and the weapon of withheld support

63:5–8

Refusal to seek forgiveness combines with a plan to withhold resources until the messenger's companions disperse. Boasts about expelling the weak expose a mistaken account of honor. Allah's resources and the dignity of faithful commitment challenge economic and social intimidation.

Pause & reflectWhen could withholding support become a means of controlling someone rather than a fair decision?

Remember and give before the final deadline

63:9–11

Believers are warned that wealth and children can displace remembrance. They are urged to give from provision before death prompts a plea for delay and a promise of future charity. The fixed term makes present generosity more urgent than imagined later intentions.

Pause & reflectWhat gift could you make now instead of promising yourself to give later?
