Al-Ma'un

The Small kindnesses

Al-Ma'un exposes rejection of accountability through treatment of vulnerable people: pushing away the orphan and failing to encourage feeding the needy. It then warns worshippers whose prayer is marked by heedlessness and display, while they withhold ordinary assistance. The chapter makes outward devotion answerable to intention and social conduct. Its closing attention to small kindnesses gives the challenge a daily scale, asking whether worship softens one's response to needs that are close enough to meet.

Traditional reports differ about the chapter's period of revelation. Its wording brings neglect of vulnerable people together with heedless, ostentatious prayer and the refusal of everyday help.

1

Neglect of the vulnerable

107:1–3

The opening asks about someone rejecting the judgment, then identifies conduct toward an orphan and feeding the needy. Belief is tested through response to vulnerability. Failure to encourage care matters alongside directly pushing someone away or treating their needs as unwelcome.

Pause & reflectDo I encourage care for the needy or merely avoid personally mistreating them?

Prayer, display, and withheld help

107:4–7

The warning turns to worshippers heedless of prayer, performing for others to see, and refusing small assistance. Attention, intention, and generosity belong together. Visible religious action cannot replace the moral responsiveness that sincere worship should cultivate in everyday encounters.

Pause & reflectWhat ordinary request tests the sincerity of my religious practice?
