Ash-Sharh

The Relief

Ash-Sharh recalls the expansion of the Prophet's breast, the lifting of a heavy burden, and the elevation of his remembrance. Its repeated assurance places ease alongside hardship, giving encouragement without denying the weight of difficulty. The closing commands turn relief into further purposeful effort and direct longing toward the Lord. The chapter offers both consolation and movement: care has already been given, hope remains possible, and renewed devotion can follow a completed task.

Traditionally read with Ad-Duhaa as a Makkan passage of encouragement, the chapter addresses the Prophet directly. The recalled burden has been explained in different ways by interpreters.

1

Relief already given

94:1–4

Questions recall an opened breast, a lifted burden weighing heavily, and elevated remembrance. They invite the Prophet to recognize divine assistance already present in his experience. Encouragement begins through memory before the chapter speaks about hardship and what follows it.

Ease alongside hardship

94:5–6

The assurance that ease accompanies hardship is repeated. Its repetition gives the listener room to dwell on hope while difficulty remains real. The passage supports endurance through confidence in divine care rather than requiring denial of strain or sorrow.

Renew effort and direct desire

94:7–8

After reassurance, the chapter calls for renewed effort when a task is completed and directs longing to the Lord. Relief is not merely the end of work. It can become space for purposeful devotion and a reorientation of desire.

Pause & reflectWhat will I seek when my next period of relief arrives?
