Al-'Asr

The Declining Day

Al-Asr presents a compact account of human loss and the way beyond it. An oath by time precedes a universal warning, then an exception joins faith, good works, and mutual encouragement in truth and endurance. None of these elements stands alone in the chapter's sentence. Time is not recovered through achievement alone: a faithful life needs action and a community willing to speak truth and help one another remain steadfast within it.

Usually regarded as Makkan, though other reports exist, the chapter states its message in three verses. Its compact structure links personal conduct with mutual responsibility among people seeking truth.

1

Time and the condition of loss

103:1–2

The oath by time introduces a broad judgment about humanity's loss. The passage unsettles confidence that passing years, busy schedules, or outward accomplishments automatically amount to success. It creates urgency for the exception that follows and for careful evaluation of one's direction.

2

Faith, action, truth, and endurance

103:3–3

The exception joins belief to good works and twice stresses mutual encouragement: toward truth and patience. An active, shared response to loss is presented. Conviction requires conduct, and people help one another remain faithful to what is true over time.
